Question: What are whiteheads?
Answer: Whiteheads are pores that have become sealed or mildly infected due to dirt and bacteria that has clogged the pores. Whiteheads appear on the skin as small white bumps or very small puss filled lumps with a small amount of redness around them. Whiteheads are not painful and do not give the skin any discomfort, however they are annoying and unappealing to look at. Whiteheads can also be caused by excess sebum clogging the pores, which can occur more easily in the hot summer season when our skin produces more oil.
Sometimes blackheads can be confused for whiteheads, but it is easy to tell them apart once you see the difference between the two.
1st picture, if the opening of pore is closed, it’s considered as whitehead
2nd picture, if the opening of pore is open, then it’s considered blackhead
If the sebaceous glands are stimulated, then sebum excesses more. If the period of turn over(period that dead skin falls off) and the cycle of excess sebum doesn’t match then sebum stays in our pores for longer and then is released during the turn over period. If this process repeats then whiteheads form and disappear, repeating itself over and over again. If you skin is like this, then your whiteheads will be non-inflamed and appear as white dots on the skin. The skin may also feel dry. If this is your situation then using “non-comedogenic” products actually doesn’t help. If you also use oil free and acne fighting products, these can actually make your skin dehydrated and become flaky but also more oily at the same time! You skin will begin to start over producing oil because you are removing too much oil with harsh acne fighting cleansers.
Tips to Get Rid Of Whiteheads!
If you have non-inflamed whiteheads, with oily, flaking, tight skin, then here are some tips:
- Increase moisture so that you can ease the dryness of your skin
- Use moisturizing products that can help you to maintain a certain amount of moisture
- Use products that contain BHA/AHA or chemical ingredient to exfoliate your skin regularly, increasing your skins natural turn over rate.
BHA, AHA, and other chemical ingredients can help to get rid of not only the dead skin and excess sebum on the surface of your skin but also deep in your pores.
