Dealing with puberty is already hard, so adding pimples on top of all of the body changes and hormones is just too much! Whether you’re struggling with whiteheads, blackheads or both, today’s post is for you.
This post is all about what you can do to help treat the whiteheads you might already have while preventing any more new ones from cropping up.
Be Kind to Your Face
The secret answer on how to remove whiteheads and prevent them.
Use a skincare routine designed to prevent acne and whiteheads such as the this skincare kit.
This is the most important tip. I can’t stress enough how vital it is to be gentle when you are treating your face. I know pimples can make you feel embarrassed or like your skin is dirty, but that is not the case. Even though your first instinct may be to scrub your skin to get rid of all of the dirt and oil, it is actually more effective to be gentle and use gentle products.
Using harsh soaps that “dry up” excess oil on your skin can actually cause more breakouts. When your skin is stripped of its natural oils, it will end up producing even more oil to replace what was taken away. This is a recipe for clogged pores and more pimples.
Instead of scrubbing and making your face “squeaky clean,” use gentle, low pH soaps with ingredients like tea tree or centella asiatica to help combat pimples. Gentle cleansers will clean dirt and makeup off of your face without stripping off the oils it needs and your skin will be less irritated and less prone to new breakouts.
Use a Gentle Exfoliator
Exfoliating your face is an important part of keeping any new breakouts to a minimum. It’s also a step that will help to make existing whiteheads disappear more quickly.
There are two ways to exfoliate. The first is called physical exfoliation and it involves using a textured pad or grainy scrub to remove dirt and dead skin from your face. The second way is called chemical exfoliation. Chemical exfoliation uses low concentrations of alpha and beta hydroxy acids to speed up your skin’s natural renewal process while also breaking up sebum and debris in your pores.
My favorite way to exfoliate is with the CosRx One Step Pimple Clear Pads. The pads come pre-soaked in a solution of ingredients that will gently exfoliate your skin while also treating current breakouts. I like to use these pads because they are simple and effective. They have one textured side and one smooth side. The textured side provides gentle physical exfoliation along with chemical exfoliation, while the smooth side helps to hydrate and smooth your skin.
Keep Your Skin Hydrated
When you have whiteheads or oily skin, you might think that you need to dry your skin out to keep it from being shiny. However, the best way to keep your skin from looking oily is actually to add moisture to it. Skin that is dehydrated is more likely to break out, stay red and produce excess oil.
To help balance out your changing skin, it’s important to keep it hydrated. If you wear makeup, adding hydration will help your makeup stay on longer and prevent your skin from getting shiny as quickly. One of my favorite hydration products for troubled skin is the Klairs Rich Moist Soothing Serum.
It is a light, watery product, which means it won’t clog your pores or make your skin feel sticky after applying it. The Rich Moist Soothing Serum can be used by men and women, as it is fragrance free and quickly absorbed into the skin. It contains several ingredients that help to moisturize your skin like hyaluronic acid, natto gum and aloe, as well as ingredients like centella asiatica, licorice, and rice bran extract to calm and brighten skin on days it is red or irritated. Plus, it comes in a sanitary pump bottle so there is no chance of getting acne-causing bacteria on your face!
In the evenings, you should also apply a slightly thicker moisturizer over the serum to help your skin stay balanced while you sleep, since sleep is when your skin is able to repair itself and fight off breakouts. You should look for moisturizers that aren’t greasy or thick, as these will usually make your breakouts worse. I usually recommend the Klairs Rich Moist Soothing Cream. It pairs perfectly with the Rich Moist Soothing Serum by providing a breathable seal over the hydrating layer of the serum.
The Rich Moist Soothing Cream has moisturizing ingredients like shea butter, ceramides and jojoba oil that can nourish oily, blemished skin without contributing to new breakouts.
Don’t Touch Your Face
I know this one is hard, but it really does make a difference! Even if you wash your hands a lot, you should try to keep them away from your face as much as possible. The oils and bacteria that are left on your fingers can aggravate any existing pimples your might have. Squeezing and picking at whiteheads can also make your skin look worse and lead to an infected pimple, which will just be harder to treat and leave an unattractive red mark long after the pimple goes away.
There are a couple of things you can do to help you keep your hands away from your face. If you have whiteheads you want to squeeze, consider getting an extractor tool that you can sanitize. This will allow you to pop the pimples without risking an infection and help with the urge to pick at spots on your face.
Another easy way to keep your hands away from your face is to use cotton pads for your skincare. There are different types of cotton pads that can help with different parts of your skincare routine. If you’re unsure of which to use, check out the Wishtrend Beauty Lab’s YouTube video for a quick tutorial on the best kinds of cotton pads to use.
If you’re looking for ways to combat blemishes, a regimen with a gentle cleanser and the products I recommended is the perfect way to start treating your acne. Wishtrend has even bundled the three products I mentioned into a single Puberty Skin Kit that allows you to purchase all three products at a discounted price!
