Blackheads are seriously one of the most frustrating skin concerns out there. Aside from the struggle with acne pimples, blackheads are in a league of their own as they can be constant, reoccurring, life-long and embarrassing. The worst part is that blackheads can appear no matter what skin type you have, whether you have oily or dry skin, blackheads are sure to turn up! So what exactly are blackheads? What causes them and how can we get rid of them at home? Well, let us tell you!
What are Blackheads?
Blackheads are the excessive build-up of dirt, oil and dead skin cells that get trapped in the pores along the hair follicles. This excessive build up in the pores forces them to remain open. Once the pores remain in a dilated state(open), the build-up within the pores then oxidizes, the oxidization of the dirt, oil and dead skin cells causes a change in colour, and that is where you get the dark yellow and black appearance of blackheads. If left alone for too long, blackheads can cause serious damage to the pores, resulting in permanent dilation. This means that even once you remove the blackhead, the pore will permanently be “stretched”, leaving a large hole in the skin. YIKES!
Side note: It doesn’t matter what skin type or skin age you are, you will still get blackheads as they are a very natural occurrence on the skin. If you have dry skin, mature skin, oily skin, teenage skin, combination skin, and even normal skin, you can still get blackheads, especially if you do not take proper care of your pores.
