Today is confession day, we all have at least one bad skin care habit that we just can’t get rid of, don’t we? Well, in this post I’m going to cover five of the most common bad skin habits and introduce simple solutions to help you break them!
1. Bad Skin from Not Cleansing Properly
I know it can be a pain to need multiple cleansing steps every night. While it’s definitely easier to just scrub your face with soap, this is a bad habit that can lead to bad skin. Often, just using a soap or cleanser is not enough to remove all of your makeup and sunscreen. Applying products on top of dirty skin will only lead to irritation and breakouts.
The best way to ensure your face is clean is to use a gentle oil and follow it with a soap or facial cleanser. The solution I recommend for this is the Klairs Gentle Black Deep Cleansing Kit.
It bundles the Gentle Black Deep Cleansing Oil, Gentle Black Sugar Charcoal Soap and Gentle Black Sugar Facial Polish so you don’t have to waste money buying separate cleansers. The oil will gently and thoroughly remove your makeup and sunscreen, while the soap will wash away any residue left so your pores stay clean and clog-free.
2. Not Using a Weekly Treatment Mask
To lots of people, treatment masks seem like an optional luxury. However, that’s actually not the case! Setting aside time every week to give your face some extra love makes a big difference.
Treatment masks can vary according to your skin type. For oily skin, a clay mask like I’m From Volcanic Mask is ideal. For skin that needs extra nourishing or brightening, the I’m From Honey Mask is a great choice. It contains over 38 percent real, herbal honey to deliver intense moisture and brightness as well as soothing and firming dull, tired or red skin.
Another great treatment mask option comes in the Klairs Gentle Black Deep Cleansing Kit I mentioned above. The Gentle Black Sugar Facial Polish is a perfect way to rid your skin of any dry flakes or dullness. Gently massaging your face with this polish once a week can help keep your skin glowing and fresh.
3. Not Applying Sunscreen Daily
Suncream is the most important part of any good skincare routine. Skipping SPF before you go outside will quickly damage your skin by making it age faster, which leads to spots, wrinkles and uneven skin tone. Even on cloudy days it’s important to wear sunscreen! UVA and UVB rays are still present behind those clouds.
The easiest way to make this a habit is to find a sunscreen that functions as a great makeup primer or leaves your skin looking lovely on its own. I like to use Lei Lani Sun Block SPF 50/PA+++. It has a light, silky finish that wears great under makeup or on its own, which is important for the days I don’t feel like wearing full makeup. It blends seamlessly into my skin and doesn’t leave the dreaded “white cast” that can make the best of us look like ghosts!
Another way to keep this habit strong is to carry a spray or powder sunscreen in your purse for touch-ups or days you’re running late.
4. Not Washing Makeup Brushes
This is one I’m guilty of! I don’t keep my makeup in the bathroom, so I sometimes go days without washing my makeup brushes and sponges. This can lead to gross buildup of old product, which is just asking for breakouts.
It’s best to wash your brushes every few days, and sanitize them with a brush cleansing spray or a little bit of rubbing alcohol. To help myself remember, I do two things. First, I set an alarm on my smartphone for the same time every week to stop what I’m doing and wash my brushes. I like to do it at night so they will be fresh and ready the next morning. Second, once I’ve used them a few times, I set them aside in a separate jar that reminds me I can’t use them again before I clean them.
5. Skipping Skincare Steps
Sometimes, we’re just too tired to do an entire routine. Other times, we’re just feeling lazy so we only do a few steps. This inconsistency will keep your skin from looking its best. To break this habit, start keeping your routine in a stylish tote or basket near your bedside. This way, you can do your routine from your bed if necessary! A consistent routine will keep your skin fresh and glowing.
We all have bad skincare habits to work on, but hopefully these tips will help you break a few of yours. What bad skincare habits are you guilty of?
